Originally a vacation destination due to its remote and scenic location, this community refrained from developing into a year-round destination until after the Second World War when the development of highways made it more easily accessible. Interestingly enough, one of the biggest debates surrounding the city is the controversy regarding how to pronounce its name. Many believe the name to have Native American roots and therefore pronounce it "mah- HO-pac," while other locals opted for the town's "MAY-o-pac" iteration. The New York Times reports in 1988 that this controversy-at least officially-was put to rest when a vote amongst city officials elected "mah-HO-pak" the official pronunciation in a 3-2 vote. The Times also notes, though, that a pole taken only two years prior found locals to prefer the "MAY-o-pac" pronunciation by a reported 74 percent. | |
